It is attitude, not circumstance, that makes success possible in even the most unlikely conditions.

Rise Above

What do a surfer and a theoretical physicist have in common? Bethany Hamilton and Stephen Hawking both rose above difficult physical circumstances by possessing attitudes of positivity, focus and determination.

Bethany was barely a teenager, just thirteen years old, when she lost her left arm to a tiger shark. She was already a champion surfer, having started seriously surfing at age eight, winning competition after competition. She came from “surfing stock” as both her parents were avid surfers.

After the attack, she was rushed to a hospital for surgery and began the road to recovery. Determined to continue surfing, she went back into the water only three weeks after the incident. She learned how to swim with one arm, and how to balance herself on the board. Just two years later, she took 1st place in the NSSA National Championships. She even wrote a book called Soul Surfer.

Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist working on the basic laws that govern the universe. He holds twelve honorary degrees, has written several books and has been the recipient of many awards. And before he had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) – an incurable, degenerative disease – he was even competing in college-level rowing at Oxford.

As Hawking’s disease progressed, his disabilities increased to the point where he could no longer walk, no longer feed himself, and due to a pneumonia and subsequent tracheotomy operation, no longer talk. This never stopped him from becoming a famous science guru known throughout the world. And through a speech synthesizer, his lectures have been heard far and wide. He is married with three children and a grandchild.

Anyone has to admit that circumstances were stacked against these two very successful people. But they rose above the challenge and have made a positive difference in countless lives. If they can, you can, too.

Ripple the Pond

Motivational Quote:

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

Ripple the Pond

What if Rosa Parks thought, “Oh, I’m just one little person, what could I do to change anything?” She would never have held her ground on that famous bus ride that set into motion desegregation on buses and added power to the Civil Rights Movement.

What if Mother Teresa thought, “What can a young woman like myself really do to help the poor? What difference could I possibly make?” She would never have begun “The Missionaries of Charity” whose primary task is to love and care for the poorest of the poor.

What if Dr. Richard Pimentel didn’t fight for the rights of his friend with cerebral palsy (who was arrested at a pancake house for being too ugly)? The Americans with Disabilities Act might never have been passed.

These people made their “drop in the pond” really count by simply following their inner conscience. They had no idea that one little thing would lead to another and another until the world changed for the better.

Each person has an effect on another person. It can’t be helped. Your small kindness could have huge repercussions, rippling out into the unknown. In the book The Richest Man in Town, one man’s small kindness radiates out to effect thousands of people, perhaps hundreds of thousands.

I’m not suggesting radical change here. I’m suggesting that you follow your gut when it’s telling you to do something you know is right. Take litter for instance. If everyone in America were to pick up one piece of litter today, there would be at least 303,824,640 less bits of trash lying around. That’s quite a lot when you think about it.

So start rippling your pond in the way that’s right for you. Your actions might just go down in history.

Water Your Attitude of Gratitude and Watch It Grow

Motivational Quote:

The currents that determine our dreams and shape our lives flow from the attitudes we nurture every day.

Water Your Attitude of Gratitude and Watch It Grow

What would happen if you didn’t water a fern? First it would struggle to remain green, then it would yellow, brown, wither and die.

Ferns need a lot of moisture to survive, and humans need water, too. Not just in the form of H2O, but in the form of small kindnesses bestowed upon them. This is the place where Earth Day and Administrative Professionals Day meet.

Spread the seed. Telling others about the accomplishments of an employee or coworker spreads the seeds of appreciation creating a nurturing environment that encourages personal and professional growth. If every seed was planted in the same hole, it would have to fight with all the others for sun, soil and water – but scattered, each seed can live in harmony.

Water the seedling. Pour on the praise. Letting someone know they are doing a good job with an in-person thank you is priceless. It’s like a refreshing rain after a dry spell and serves to sustain growth for an extended period of time.

Repot when necessary. Sometimes promotions are in order, and when someone makes it to the next level in their job, make sure to create some sort of celebration. Employees like to know they are on a path that leads to a bigger, better place. Plants can get root-bound when left in the same size pot for too long – they need additional space for further growth.

Thanking those around you and cultivating an attitude of appreciation helps reduce stress and fosters a positive atmosphere in the workplace and beyond. Remembering to brighten someone else’s day will in turn brighten yours.

Need some help cultivating your attitude of gratitude? Our May You Be Blessed gift book offers concrete ways to appreciate others as does our Simple Truths of Appreciation gift book.

Attitude: Your Pot of Gold

Motivational Quote:

“The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.” – William James

Attitude: Your Pot of Gold

Rainbows. They are a part of the mythology of many cultures (tribes in Siberia believe it is the tongue of the sun!), and are seen in a positive light by many people. But most of us think of Ireland, leprechauns and the mysterious pot of gold at the rainbow’s end. Many states in the U.S.A. even have lotteries named Pot O’ Gold with “rainbows of riches” as their prizes.

Irish folklore suggests leprechauns are part of a fairy group known as “little people,” but the whole myth that they are cobblers was just a mix-up with the Irish word that means shoemaker. Cobbler or not, most people are more interested in their gold treasure, which can only be bartered for the wee one’s freedom – after you catch him (we think of leprechauns as men, even though there is no evidence of that – of course, evidence is relative in this case). And good luck with that, because they’re tiny, reclusive, tricky and well, imaginary.

If you’ve ever tried to look for the end of the rainbow, it keeps moving off further in the distance, and your potential pot of gold seems very elusive. However, Jason Erdkamp wasn’t even looking for the end of the rainbow when he found it – on Orange County’s 341 toll road in February of this year.

Guess what? No pot of gold, no leprechaun – just light hitting asphalt.

But what if the real pot of gold is the quote by William James? What if your attitude, and the way you view life, can be altered by just thinking differently? Thinking positively. Thinking of obstacles as opportunities. Seeing each challenge as a learning experience.

I don’t think Jason Erdkamp was disappointed by finding the end of the rainbow – I think he was excited, delighted and fascinated. He wanted to capture the phenomenon and share the magic. Did his attitude play any part in his winning a few dollars that night in the lottery? Maybe. Maybe not. But our attitudes can direct us toward better lives.

The next time you’re tempted to react negatively to exterior circumstances consider adjusting your attitude a few notches toward the positive side and see what happens. It’s easier than catching a leprechaun.

A Meaningful World

Change Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Learn to embrace change, and you’ll begin to recognize that life is in constant motion, and every change happens for a reason. When you see boundaries as opportunities, the world becomes a limitless place, and your life becomes a journey of change that always finds its way.

A Meaningful World

There are two camps: life has meaning; life is meaningless. If you believe the latter, I applaud you for the courage to continue the journey and make the most of what exists now. However, this blog will address the former.

When one perceives a connectedness between all things, purpose lurks around every corner. Choices matter. Coincidences are few. Signs and symbols are saturated with meaning. Life’s curveballs become winding paths. Catastrophes emerge as stepping stones to fresh ways of thinking and new purposes.

Very few people know with certainty what the future holds for them. But breaking free of limitations, pushing past conventional modes of thinking and embracing change can add a touch of excitement to the journey at hand.

The Power of Politeness

Service Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Service Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Service is the lifeblood of any organization. Everything flows from it and is nourished by it. Customer service is not a department…it’s an attitude.

The Power of Politeness

I recently had an interesting customer service experience.

I placed an order on October 29th for a holiday gift, thinking I had plenty of wiggle room. As time dragged on, I e-mailed the company several times with no response. Whenever I called, I had to leave a message with a robot. By the time I finally got through in mid-December, I was furious.

A soothing, gentle voice quickly said, “I’m so sorry to keep you waiting, what can I do for you?”

The relaxed tone of her voice coupled with the fact she began the conversation with an immediate apology dispelled my fury in an instant. After listening attentively to my grievance, she apologized again for the specific problem. She then offered several solutions and explained why the item was delayed and why the e-mails and phone messages were not answered. She was honest and specific about the reasons why.

Politeness is more powerful than one might think. It cuts through our tough exterior walls like a knife through soft butter. It brings human kindness into the mix. A kind word really does turn away wrath.

The Power of Attitude

Motivational Quote:
Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst…a spark that creates extraordinary results.

The Power of Attitude

Maybe you see the glass as half full, maybe you see it as half empty – but the truth of the matter is that the glass is filled to the halfway point either way. Your perspective doesn’t physically change the amount of water in the glass, but it sure does change the way you feel about the water.

Choosing to think and react positively to exterior circumstances really can change you from the inside out. Practice may not make perfect, but it will certainly help. If you start trying to see the positive side of each situation you face, you’ll soon find an optimistic approach comes naturally.
