Five Heads are Better than One

Motivational Quote:

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

Five Heads are Better than One

Maybe you’ve heard of this challenge. Five people were put into a room. In the room was an eight-foot long, slanted hollow tube sealed at the bottom and attached to the floor. The tube was just large enough in diameter to fit a ping pong ball, which was resting in the bottom of the tube. The objective? To get the ping pong ball out, intact.

Nothing else was in the room except for a small table of snacks, cups and pitchers of water because the group was committed to staying in the room until they solved the challenge.

The group tried various things. One idea was to put gum (that someone was chewing) at the end of a belt worn by one of the team members and lower it down hoping the gum would stick to the ping pong ball. But the belt wasn’t long enough. Many of the ideas they came up with were creative, but none of them worked.

Suggestions ricocheted back and forth until they were stumped, slumped on the floor and filling their pieholes with snacks. Once relaxed, an idea hatched.

Can you guess what it was? They poured the pitcher of water into the tube causing the ball to rise up to the top. It was then easily removed.

I don’t think one person alone would have come up with the solution. It was the give and take between individuals, the trying, the failing and the trying again that solved the riddle.

A Meaningful World

Change Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Change Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Learn to embrace change, and you’ll begin to recognize that life is in constant motion, and every change happens for a reason. When you see boundaries as opportunities, the world becomes a limitless place, and your life becomes a journey of change that always finds its way.

A Meaningful World

There are two camps: life has meaning; life is meaningless. If you believe the latter, I applaud you for the courage to continue the journey and make the most of what exists now. However, this blog will address the former.

When one perceives a connectedness between all things, purpose lurks around every corner. Choices matter. Coincidences are few. Signs and symbols are saturated with meaning. Life’s curveballs become winding paths. Catastrophes emerge as stepping stones to fresh ways of thinking and new purposes.

Very few people know with certainty what the future holds for them. But breaking free of limitations, pushing past conventional modes of thinking and embracing change can add a touch of excitement to the journey at hand.

The Power of Politeness

Service Waterfall Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Service is the lifeblood of any organization. Everything flows from it and is nourished by it. Customer service is not a department…it’s an attitude.

The Power of Politeness

I recently had an interesting customer service experience.

I placed an order on October 29th for a holiday gift, thinking I had plenty of wiggle room. As time dragged on, I e-mailed the company several times with no response. Whenever I called, I had to leave a message with a robot. By the time I finally got through in mid-December, I was furious.

A soothing, gentle voice quickly said, “I’m so sorry to keep you waiting, what can I do for you?”

The relaxed tone of her voice coupled with the fact she began the conversation with an immediate apology dispelled my fury in an instant. After listening attentively to my grievance, she apologized again for the specific problem. She then offered several solutions and explained why the item was delayed and why the e-mails and phone messages were not answered. She was honest and specific about the reasons why.

Politeness is more powerful than one might think. It cuts through our tough exterior walls like a knife through soft butter. It brings human kindness into the mix. A kind word really does turn away wrath.

Presidential Inspiration

Motivational Quote:

He failed in business in ’31.
He was defeated for state legislator in ’32.
He tried another business in ’33. It failed.
His fiancee died in ’35.
He had a nervous breakdown in ’36.
In ’43 he ran for congress and was defeated.
He tried again in ’48 and was defeated again.
He tried running for the Senate in ’55. He lost.
The next year he ran for Vice President and lost.
In ’59 he ran for the Senate again and was defeated.
In 1860, the man who signed his name A. Lincoln, was elected the 16th President of the United States. The difference between history’s boldest accomplishments and its most staggering failures is often, simply, the diligent will to persevere.

Presidential Inspiration

This sorry-looking “resume” would never stand a chance of snagging an interview, much less paving a road to success. Even the brightest optimist might call it quits.

But Lincoln stood his ground, becoming the embodiment of the saying “If you don’t succeed, try, try again.” He became one of the most famous presidents in history. If honest Abe’s life isn’t inspirational, what is?

If you’d like a reminder of perseverance, Successories has a desk-sized framed print of Lincoln with the quote above.

We’ve also created a small framed “We Can Obama Print” using key phrases from Barack Obama’s inaugural speech combined with the image of a dove and American flag. We don’t know what history has in store, but presidential inspiration seems to be on the upswing.

Let the Sunshine In

Motivational Quote:

Be the light that others can come to with their ideas, visions and dreams. Never doubt that blending your talents with those of others can change the world.

Let the Sunshine In

Have you ever heard of someone described as “a ray of sunshine?” The saying is a little old fashioned, but it describes a person with a sunny disposition, a person that other people like to be around because they feel better in this particular person’s presence.

These people are gold. They glow from within. They are self-confident but not conceited. They encourage others to shine. They rarely judge others. In fact, this nonjudgmental attitude draws others to open up and share their dreams. When dreams are listened to and taken seriously, they are allowed to expand into reality.

With just one of these affirming people in a collaborative group, the team can go on to achieve more than it would otherwise because the sunny person acts as a listening ear for ideas, a buffer for impending fears and a catalyst for positive change.

If you’re putting together a group, any type of group from staff teams to volunteer organizations to an Oprah-inspired book club, go out of your way to find and include that “ray of sunshine.” You, and everyone else associated with the group, will be glad you did.

The Benefits of Integrity

The Courage of Integrity Framed Motivational Print

The Courage of Integrity Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:
The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity…these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.

The Benefits of Integrity

Merriam-Webster defines integrity as a firm adherence to a code of moral values, or the quality or state of being complete or undivided.

When you follow your own moral compass and do what you think is right, you achieve a sense of completeness. If you disobey your own value system, you become divided, unbalanced and uneasy.

If asked if we wanted to feel complete and whole, very few of us would say no (and if we did, um, Houston, we’ve got a problem). Yet when confronted with a choice our gut tells us is wrong, but our mind rationalizes into a “That’s really not so bad, in fact it’s OK because of such and such…” we can fold more easily than we might think.

The answer is repetition of good behavior. Practicing integrity on a daily basis may take courage, but it’s ultimately satisfying, and over time will be our first choice.

Overcoming the Fear of Change

Embrace Change Seasons Framed Motivational Print

Embrace Change Seasons Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Temperatures will rise and fall. Winds will shift. Leaves will drop and buds will form. And with every transition new beginnings will be revealed.

Overcoming the Fear of Change

Change is inevitable. It’s a part of life. But it can also be scary. Why? Because most people prefer predictable, known results over the unpredictable unknown.

How many times have you ordered the same entree at a particular restaurant? I do it all the time. Why? Because I know I relish that dish, and that I’ll feel happy and satisfied every time I eat it.

If I branch out to something else on the menu, I wonder: what if I don’t like the food and have a negative experience? Why risk that when I know I can have a guaranteed positive experience?

What I’m conveniently ignoring is the possibility of truly wonderful experience beyond my rather high expectations. If I don’t try something else, I’m robbing myself of potential ambrosia.

If we take the stance of embracing change, of welcoming it into our lives – it can become an exciting adventure. If we can look past the fear into a place of heightened expectation, we can ready ourselves for the next bend in the road where a beautiful vista might unfold, or where honey-glazed, pistachio-encrusted plantains might be our next favorite food.

Incorporating Your Passion into Your Life

Passion Tree Framed Motivational Print

Passion Tree Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

There are many things in life that will capture your eye, but very few will capture your heart. These are the ones to pursue. These are the ones worth keeping.

Incorporating Your Passion into Your Life:

What are you passionate about? It can be something little (I’m passionate about reading) or something big (I’m passionate about making a difference in the world).

Once you’ve discovered your passion, try to incorporate it into your life by dividing it into small, manageable portions that you can add to your weekly agenda. For example, instead of thinking you have to sit down for hours to read a book, carve out a portion of your lunch time on, say, Tuesdays, to read.

If you want to make a difference in the world without feeling overwhelmed, try following a guide book like Every Monday Matters that gives you an activity to do each week.

When you begin to exercise your passion on a regular basis, you’ll find yourself happier because even though many of your exterior circumstances may not have changed, you truly are doing something you really want to do.

The Impossible Made Possible

Dream Beach Framed Motivational Print

Motivational Quote:

Resolve to succeed. The greatest discovery one can make is that nothing is impossible.

The Impossible Made Possible:

Did you ever imagine having your own tropical island? Who hasn’t? Seems like a pipe dream, right?

Well, Reishee Sowa made his dream into reality. Not by getting rich and buying an island, but making one out of 250,000 empty plastic pop bottles, some leftover wood and various bags of leaves.

It wasn’t easy, and it took almost seven years to create, but this self-sufficient island is enviable as an artistic and architectural feat. It is environmentally friendly, filled with all sorts of plants and his house even has a guest room. Plus, it’s a fun place to live for Rieshee and his pets.

Many said it was impossible, but Sowa begs to differ, as he’s lived on his island for over a decade.

If you really want to succeed, you can. All you need is a little ingenuity, a willingness to work hard, and in Sowa’s case, a lot of pop bottles!

See pictures of Sowa’s island and a YouTube bottle island clip from Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Motivational Posters – Why Now?

Diversity Marbles Motivational Poster

Motivational Posters – Why Now?

Now more than ever we need to be motivated. Let’s face it, economic times are tough. Many businesses have had to downsize to the point that one person is now doing the job of three people. Because of this, employees are more likely to burn out, unable to keep up the pace with ever-increasing demands on their time and energy.

Many people poke fun at motivational posters, citing the “Hang in There” kitten as the beginning of a Pollyanna optimism, but, silly or not, that poster was everywhere. It was so popular, probably everyone reading this blog has seen some version of it in his or her lifetime, or at least heard of it. Jennifer McKnight-Trontz even wrote a book – Hang in There! Inspirational Art of the 1970s – using a clinging kitten on the cover.

On some fundamental level, that kitten poster with its seemingly trite inspirational phrase struck a chord with the human need to hope. And studies show that motivational posters really do have a positive affect on human behavior. One type of study was done, using motivational posters to promote stair use versus elevator use, was successful in The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Denmark, England and the United States.

Of course people can be motivated by fear, but that is an irresponsible, outdated model that wears itself out and eventually breeds apathy, numbness or anger. Even a pinhole of light in a black box transforms the darkness.

Positive motivational posters do have a place in business and in life. They offer hope, inspiration and encouragement when bitterness and chaos seem to be knocking on our collective door. Even simple logic would suggest that a drab gray wall is less inspiring than a motivational poster of, yes, a sunset on a rocky shoreline that states: Believe and Succeed “Courage does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” – Mary Anne Radmacher
